Basque State Towns Tale
I. For the Dawn of your time
When the ice ages receded and the 1st human teams roamed the humid valleys on the Cantabrian Sea, the lands we now connect with Euskal Herria were being now a refuge. During the caves of Santimamiñe, Ekain, Isturitz, and Aitzbitarte, anonymous hands still left bison, horses, and symbols that still seem to resonate these days.
They had been hunter-gatherer peoples, tailored to rugged mountains, swift rivers, and coasts rich in fish.
Around millennia, these teams settled, cultivated the land, lifted livestock, and formed communities that, Even though diverse, shared cultural traits that would outlast entire empires.
II. The Vascones, Caristii, Varduli, and Autrigones

For the duration of this time, a name emerged that may resonate for hundreds of years: Vasconia.
• In Navarre, the Vascones arranged themselves all-around Pamplona.
• While in the Northern Basque Country (Iparralde), the Duchy of Vasconia stretched with the Garonne River for the Pyrenees.
• In Biscay, Gipuzkoa, and Álava, local lineages preserved autonomy amidst the mountains and valleys.
The Vikings attacked the coast; the Franks tried to control the Pyrenean passes; the Visigoths and later on the Muslims clashed on the Ebro frontier.
Although the Basque communities survived, adapting without having getting rid of their identity.
IV. The Kingdom of Pamplona / Kingdom of Navarre
During the 9th century, the Kingdom of Pamplona was born, which might later turn into the Kingdom of Navarre.
For centuries, it had been a vital player in peninsular and European politics.
• Navarre was the middle of power.
• Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, and Álava have been associated with the kingdom at distinct situations.
• The Northern Basque Nation (Iparralde) was Component of the Navarrese sphere of influence until finally the enlargement of the Capetian dynasty.
